Attendance Policy

Regular class attendance and participation are expected. Attendance and participation may include attending class in person or online, submitting academic assignments, participating in interactive tutorials or study groups, completing online activities, or engaging in other instructor-directed learning activities. Students are responsible for understanding the university attendance policy and any course-specific attendance requirements outlined in each course syllabus.

ABSENCES

When absent, students remain responsible for finding out what class activities occurred during the absence and make up missed work if the instructor permits it. When a student knows in advance that it will be necessary to miss a class session, the student should inform the instructor.

When a student has missed a significant portion of coursework, which may be difficult or impossible to make up, the student should confer with the course instructor to explore options, including withdrawal from the course. The student may consult with an academic advisor or the Dean of Student Affairs Office to consider various options.

Absences occasioned by official University activities, such as participation in conferences, intercollegiate athletic events, musical performances, and other events, must be documented in advance through the Dean of Student Affairs Office. A student that knows that such absences will occur shall confer with the instructor in respect to such absences.

Students may also contact the Dean of Student Affairs Office with questions about the University's policy on class attendance.

STUDENTS REPORTING AS NEVER ATTENDED

To comply with federal enrollment and financial aid reporting requirements, the university monitors attendance and participation at the start of each term.

  • Students who attend or participate in a course must be reported to the Registrar’s Office as Attended to confirm enrollment one-time at the start of each term.
  • Students who do not attend or participate in a course by the end of the second week will be withdrawn from the course roster and assigned a  grade of 'N' (Never Attended).
  • Students who do not attend or participate in any course on their schedule by the end of the second week will be dropped from the university. Tuition and fee charges will be reversed, and the courses will be removed from the transcript.
  • Students who have been removed from the course may request reinstatement from the instructor and be approved in the third week.
  • Full-time students do not receive a refund when withdrawn from individual courses for non-attendance. Part-time students are issued a 60% refund when withdrawn from an individual course for non-attendance.
  • For courses less than 8 weeks, attendance or participation must occur by the end of the first week. Students removed for non-attendance may be approved by the instructor for reinstatement in the second week.

STUDENTS WHO STOP ATTENDING

Students who stop attending a course but do not officially withdraw remain responsible for any tuition and fees associated with the course.

Instructors assign a midterm and final grade of 'FS' (Failure Due to Stop Out) and report the student's last date of attendance when a student stops attending and does not complete the course.
