Science Education, M.S. with Educator Preparation Program

Application Deadline

Students are accepted for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Applicants may complete up two courses (with advisement) as a non-matriculated student while in the application process.

M.S. in Science Education

The program in science education is designed for secondary science teachers or those students interested in obtaining certification in secondary science. Candidates choose an area of concentration from within the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics or earth science). A minimum of 15 credits within the sciences must be completed. The balance of the program provides preparation in science education including the history and philosophy of science, the use of technology in the secondary classroom, science curriculum and an integrated science project.

This program has been designed to address the National Science Standards for Professional Development in science education. To complete the capstone requirement, students will be able to choose between a master's thesis or special project in an area of science or science education.

Program Sequence-30 Credits

As sequencing changes, it is highly recommended that students meet with their program advisor to finalize a list of requirements for graduation.  

Core Requirements
IDS 571 - Science Lab Practices - 3 credits
SCE 570 - Historical Dimensions of Scientific Thought - 3 credits
SCE 572 - Recent Development in Science Education - 3 credits
SCE 573 - Multimedia Technology in the Science Classroom - 3 credits
SCE 575 - Intergrated Science Experience - 3 credits
SCE 574 - Special Project in Science Education - 3 credits

Additional Requirements

Students must complete 12 graduate level credits in either Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, or Environmental Education Science Core.

Secondary School Science Teacher Certification

Graduate students may complete a teacher preparation program in secondary science as a certificate program or while pursuing a Master 's degree in Science Education or Environmental Education. Students may obtain certification in biology, physics, chemistry, earth science and/or general science. Students with undergraduate degrees in science or other disciplines are welcome. Courses are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Interested students are encouraged to contact the department for advisement and to schedule a meeting to review student's transcripts.

Please refer to the section entitled "Admission to Teacher Certification Programs" in the beginning of this catalog for admission standards and requirements. Applicants who have completed all required science content coursework will need to complete the following courses. (No more than two courses may be taken before acceptance into the School of Education.)

Note: Students must be accepted into the Graduate School AND the School of Education before taking SCE 490, SCE 494, and SCE 496
