Application Deadline

Students must apply for the history program by April 1 for the fall semester and October 1 for the spring semester.

Admission Procedures  

All applicants must complete the School of Graduate Studies application. In addition, they must submit two letters of recommendation using the School of Education form and a 500-word statement of purpose. Applicants to the teacher certification program must complete the additional School of Education's admission application and submit it to the following address:

A minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 with at least 18 credits of history is required for admission.

Applicants must meet requirements of the Office of Graduate Admissions and the School of Education, including an overall undergradaute grade point average of 3.0 and take the Praxis®: Social Science Content examination. In addition, 18 credits in undergraduate history at a grade point average of 3.0 and 18 credits in social sciences, specifically one course in political science, geography, economics, and psychology are required for admission.

When the Office of Graduate Admissions notifies applicants that their file is complete, they must contact the History Graduate Coordinator to write a planned program of study. No applicant with a complete file is matriculated without a planned program of study approved by the Dean or Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and an acceptance letter from the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Interested applicants who do not meet school or departmental requirements should consult the History Graduate Coordinator before taking courses as a non-matriculated student.

Master of Science Degree in History with Social Science Teacher Certification — (51 Credit Comprehensive Examination) (54 Special Project Capstone) (57 Credit Thesis Capstone)

The Master of Science degree is designed to combine advanced historical study (21 credits) with course work necessary for certification to teach History and Social Science in grades 7-12 (30 credits).

Candidates choosing the thesis option will complete a program of study consisting of 21 credits of history classes in a chosen major and minor field of history, certification coursework of 30 credits and a 6 credit thesis (57 credits total). Candidates who already hold state certification may elect to complete a different capstone experience,: either the comprehensive exams, requiring 21 credits of history coursework and 30 credits of certification work for a total of of 51 credits or the special project capstone, which requires 21 credits of coursework and a 3 credit capstone experience course (54 credits total). Candidates will be able to specialize in their history coursework in either American, European, or Non-Western fields with at least one course in each field.
